WHO ARE WE?
About the company
GCR AD is a Bulgarian engineering company that specializes in analyses, management, and design solutions for the power sector and industry. The company was founded in 1995 in Sofia as a joint-venture between Risk Engineering Ltd. from Bulgaria and the American engineering firm Gilbert Commonwealth International Ltd. seeking to better serve the local technical consulting market. A number of ownership transformations over the years culminated at the end of 2016 when GCR was acquired by Dr. Eng. Bogomil Manchev, an internationally recognized expert in nuclear energy, co-founder, and long-time CEO of Risk Engineering. The key engineering team with decades of experience and deep expertise, together with whom Dr. Eng. Manchev had previously developed Risk Engineering, decided to follow the move, and transferred to GCR soon after.
Today, GCR is among the leading Bulgarian providers of engineering and scientific and technical consulting services in the energy sector. Our team is composed of highly qualified experts with a large portfolio of successfully completed projects. Our experts have experience in all power generation technologies – nuclear, conventional, and renewable, including energy efficiency technologies. The company offers a wide range of services, with a focus on safety assessment and management for the nuclear power sector.
GCR AD is a joint stock company, which is managed by a Board of Directors. The Executive Director, Dr. Eng. Bogomil Manchev, has a leading role in the Board of Directors. He has overall responsibility for simultaneously generating the strategic vision for the company and overseeing the implementation of our business goals.
Dr. Eng. Bogomil Manchev was born in Sofia, Bulgaria on December 31, 1957. He graduated with a Masters of Engineering degree in Thermal Nuclear Power Engineering at the Higher Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in Sofia (today’s Technical University). On December 1, 1984, he joined the staff of Kozloduy NPP (KNPP) as an Operator of Unit 1. He quickly grew to the most responsible operational position of a Unit Engineer on Duty. As such, he participated in the commissioning of Units 5 and 6 of KNPP – challenging and unique activities for Bulgaria at the time. He also worked at the nuclear research reactor at the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy (INRNE) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. He completed a postgraduate qualification in Expert Systems and Artificial Intelligence. In 2001 he defended his doctoral dissertation on “Reliability characteristics of systems important for the safety of WWER 1000 reactors.”
In 1992, together with colleagues, he founded a private business in the field of safety analysis. The companies managed by Dr. Eng. Manchev have proven to be worthy competitors of the leading Western majors in the field of nuclear energy over the years. As such, they were a key part of the most significant projects in Bulgaria, including the modernization of Kozloduy NPP and the development of Belene NPP project. Dr. Eng. Manchev is Chairman of the Bulgarian Atomic Forum (Bulatom), the non-governmental organization of the Bulgarian nuclear industry.
